About Xiamen
Xiamen is situated on the southeast coast of Fujian Province. Xiamen City consists of Xiamen Island and parts on the mainland. On the mainland, Xiamen City is surrounded by Zhangzhou in the south and Quanzhou in the north. Across the Taiwan Straits from Xiamen City are the Taiwan islands.
To encourage economic development, Xiamen was made one of the first five special economic zones in China directly attached to the central government. Its 1565 square kilometers and 1.6 million population is distributed across 6 districts: Siming, Huli, Jimei, Haicang, Tong'an and Xiang'an. Xiamen has a natural harbor with deep water that is ice-free all the year round. As such, and because of its strategic location, Xiamen City has always been an important seaport for foreign trade. Xiamen enjoys a pleasant climate and beautiful natural environment. She has won various awards for its clean and green environment. More than eleven million tourists flock to Xiamen each year to take in the sights of this beautiful city. There are still many historic churches in the region. Believers of Buddhism, Christianity, Catholicism and lslam can all be found in Xiamen, of which the Buddhists form the majority. Nanputuo Temple and South Fujian Buddhism Institution both enjoy a great reputation.
