Major Festivals and EventsSpring Festival1st to 15th day of January on the Lunar CalendarAlso known as the Chinese New Year, it falls on the 1st day of the Chinese Lunar Calendar, and is one of the most celebrated festivals of the year. From a few weeks before the New Year, preparations will begin where houses are thoroughly cleaned, debts are paid, new clothes are purchases and hair is cut. Actual celebrations begin on the eve, where extended families will gather together for a reunion dinner. Expect transportation networks to be especially crowded around this period as migrant populations return home to celebrate with their families. Xiamen International MarathonLast Saturday of MarchSince its launch in the spring of 2003, this event has become one of the largest sporting events in China each year. It is a sister event to the Autumn Marathon held in Beijing each year.
Mid Autumn Festival15th day of August on the Lunar CalendarAlso known as the Mooncake Festival, this traditional Chinese Festival falls on the 15th day of the 8th month of the Chinese Lunar Calendar, where the moon appears brighter and larger than any other time of the year. During this period in Xiamen, there is a lot of gift exchange activity, mainly involving moon cakes and tea leaves. These gifts can be can be found in a great variety of flavors and packing. There is also a tradition unique to Xiamen, where groups of friends, family or colleagues gather to engage in a game of luck, where prizes are won when certain combinations appear when 6 dice are thrown into a bowl.
China International Fair for Investment and Trade (CIFIT)8th to 11th of SeptemberHeld at the International Conference and Exhibition Center, this is the biggest fair in Xiamen each year. It is the largest fair of its sort in China devoted to attracting foreign direct investment. The fair attracts great interest from investors worldwide. Expect business hotels to be busy during this period.
